1. Get glossy

If you’ve gone bright red, keep the colour fresh by booking a gloss treatment once every couple of weeks between colour appointments. ‘It takes less than half an hour and will keep the red vibrant,’ says colourist Josh Wood, whose celeb redheads all do it.

2. Use protection

‘Red is a fragile tone,’ says Wood, ‘which is why I’m a great believer in pre-shampoo treatments, masks and oils. You should also avoid chlorinated pools (or at least wear a cap) and try to reduce the number of times you lather up.’ Try Wella Color Recharge Warm Red Conditioner, £10.50, and Pureology Reviving Red Oil, £24.60.

3. Try the trend

Brunettes can try the trend without commitment by getting a semi-permanent treatment (vegetable rinse) or gloss,’ says Wood. ‘Blondes can warm their highlights or go for a (albeit temporary) red rinse for a cool, strawberry-pink look.’

4. Dial it up

Red is vibrant and needs glowing skin and defined features to match. Use a warm-toned tinted moisturiser, get your eyelashes tinted (black) and invest in a red or pink lipstick. They go great with red hair. Try Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy in Spice, £26.50

5. Fade it out

Red is a notoriously high-maintenance colour, but you can embrace the fade-out. ‘It’ll eventually turn into a strawberry blonde or a slightly warmer version of your natural hair colour. You can also grow your roots an inch or so long, like Kristen Stewart, for a modern, laid-back take on the trend.’
