It's been nearly 30 years since Winona Ryder starred as Lydia opposite Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's iconic Beetlejuice, so you can understand how excited we were to hear that the glorious pairing was returning to our screens for another outing.

But despite the fact that Tim Burton finally confirmed that the film is cast, written and ready get filming, Michael Keaton has just thrown a spanner in the works.

When being interviewed by Variety, he was asked if he had any updates on the highly anticipated film, to which he replied: “No. Zero. You always hear things, that this is happening, and people seem to know more about it than I do… It’s possible that ship has sailed.”

Sorry, what?

The news comes after Burton was quoted saying: "The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team. We have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board; this includes both Winona [Ryder] and Michael [Keaton]," he told Showbizspy.

We think our hearts may have just broken a little bit. We were seriously excited about the return of our childhood hero, Lydia Deetz, who provided us with the antithesis of the blonde cheerleader that had became synonymous with 1980s film, and began our obsession with Winona's dark USP - Veronica in Heathers, Kim in Edward Scissorhands, Charlotte in Mermaid - the list goes on.

And while many a reboot has been announced over the past year with slight trepidation, most recently Charmed and Gilmore Girls, the revival of Burton's most iconic film is filled us with nothing but pure joy.

Now it seems we'll never know how Ryder's character Lydia, who was just 17 years old when she played the angsty teen, would fare as an adult, 30 years on. Would she still be floating from the ceiling singing 'daylight come and me wanna go home?' We'll never know.

Seems we'll just have to make do with re-runs of this...
