Beauty confession: while we love seeing creative nail art on other people, in reality, we never have time to do it ourselves. Plus, it never lasts and to look chic, not cheap, nail arts got to be pristine. That said, there are a few low-key (yet still lovely) ways to get your nail art fix. Here are springs freshest, most fun and fashionable ideas that will still work in real life

Blue moons at Peter Som S/S 2014
We loved this look and blue polish is definitely big news for nails right now.
The Zoya varnishes used at Peter Som aren’t available in the UK, but you can get the look by painting on one coat of light green varnish, letting it dry, then applying two coats of blue from two-thirds of the way down the nail. Beautiful.

Pink Princess Textured Glitter Nail Paint by Barry M
Jazz up tired metallic nail polish by taking inspiration from Betsey Johnson’s spring 2014 show and sweep a glittery top coat just over the tips. A fine pale pink glitter, like this one from Barry M, looks lovely over silver or gold.
It will breathe new life into your nail colour and, as glitter polish is super hard-wearing, will help it last longer, too.

Blue metallic strips at Prabal Gurung S/S 2014
Blue glitter might sound like a step too far, but painted in delicate strips down the centre of each nail, as nail technicians for the ICB by Prabal Gurung spring 2014 show, it gives a pretty flash of colour without looking too full-on.
Get the look by painting a strip of metallic foil glitter, like Deborah Lippmann’s stunning Across the Universe, £18, over a sheer pale nude polish.

Flower Manicure in Strike a Posy by Ciate
Ciate’s tiny little dried flowers are nature’s own version of nail art.
Fiddly, yes, but applied to short, manicured nails and topped with a hard-wearing topcoat, they last pretty well and look sweet for spring.
Not keen on real flowers? Model’s Own will soon have a range of pretty sticker-like transfers in all sorts of petal motifs or look out for Dior’s covetable Breton stripe nail transfers, coming soon.

The accent nail
Worn on one nail (we love the ring or pinky finger) the single accent is a great way of making a statement without trying too hard.
Try a mix of two different textures (say, wearing a single metallic colour and keeping the rest of your manicure matt or satin) or clashing a bright nail colour (like Queen Bey) with a single pop of a contrasting hue.

Nail Art Pen by Models’ Own
Tibi’s spring/summer 2014 catwalk show provided new nail art inspiration in the form of perfect nude manicures being given an edgy lift with simple strokes of a black nail art pen.
We like Model’s Own’s easy to use pens, but look out for some great pens coming soon from Sally Hansen.

Rainbow brights
A collection of rainbow colours across your nails looks pretty and playful but still chic.
To keep the look cool, ensure nails are short and try a tonal palette of three similar colours – greens, pinks, reds and yellows all look great.
Forget glitters polishes, neons and special effects – glossy, creamy colours work best. Try this season’s new tropical bright polishes.
