Irish expats everywhere are heading home to make their vote count in Ireland's gay marriage referendum. A referendum that could see Ireland become the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by voting.

If you've had half an eye on Twitter over the past 24 hours, the thousands of people tweeting their journeys back to Ireland make for particularly heartwarming reading.

According to statistics there are 60,000 Irish expats who are eligible to vote in today's referendum, however to make their voices heard they must show up to polling stations in person. Cue thousands of photos of Irish expats travelling by plane, train and boat to make it home in time.

The Twitter account @gettheboat2vote has been encouraging Irish citizens everywhere to share their #HomeToVote stories, including those who've flown home from Berlin and Abu Dhabi to vote yes.

Come on Ireland, you can do it.
